BRYERS, Joseph (married Kohu Whareumu - Ngati Manu)
Kylie
Hi other Bryers relatives - am trying to trace the origins of Joseph Bryers who immigrated here in 1830ish and married Te Whareumu's daughter, the lovely Kohu (yes I have looked at the other posts in here about his parents being either John & Josephine or Joseph & Josephine - which I don't think is correct unless they were French). So my question is, what French rumours have you heard passed down the family line? My mother told me when I was young that our name was Du Bruyere or similar but the Maori couldn't say it so we had to change to Bryers - which is ridiculous as we already had a Maori name anyway. In Judith Bryers Holloway book she also alludes to a French general of Napoleon. I've done the research and it seems to fit, but I'd like to know what others have heard passed down their family lines? It would help to fill in a huge gap and since I can trace my family back to Kupe on Kohu's side, I'd like to go further back than just Joseph on the other side.
Please help!
